It was Japan who went ahead first.
In the 30th minute, Yamane’s deflected shot led to a lucky goal.
But Colombia fought back.
Eight minutes into the second half, Asprilla equalized.
Six minutes later, they took the lead as the Japanese defense scrambled back and forth.
Japan had their chances.
But a penalty kick awarded for an opponent’s handball hit the crossbar and flew wide.
Three minutes later, Hoesung’s header was also blocked by the post.
After missing chances in front of goal in extra time, Japan ultimately lost 2-1, earning a 1-1 draw, while Colombia, who had won two straight, advanced to the round of 16.
In the ‘Group of Death’, Group D, Nigeria virtually sealed their place in the round of 16.
They moved to the top of the group with two straight wins, including a 2-0 victory over Italy, who beat Brazil.
