Machado, who signed a 10-year contract with the Padres ahead of the 2019 season, agreed to a new 11-year, $350 million contract ahead of this season. He has agreed to a de facto life contract, with his contract guaranteed until 2033.

After staying in San Diego for a long time, this time he invested in the first MLS club based in San Diego.

It is not uncommon for sports stars to invest in clubs in other sports. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named to the group of owners of the Kansas City Royals, a major league team related to the same area.

NBA star LeBron James is a partner of Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox. Another NBA star, Giannis Antetokounmpo, joined the group of Milwaukee Brewers owners.

Padres owner Peter Seidler welcomed the new MLS club in San Diego in a statement, saying that Machado’s joining the owner’s group “shows his love for San Diego and makes his relationship with the community more special and powerful.” San Diego will participate as the 30th team in MLS by paying a subscription fee of $500 million. The $500 million is the largest subscription fee in MLS history.

Snapdragon Stadium, built on the site of the Padres’ former home stadium, will be used as the home stadium.
