Actor Kang Tae-oh (real name Kim Yoon-hwan), who is currently serving in the military, made an appearance at a Memorial Day ceremony. Kang Tae-oh rose to prominence last year after appearing in the popular ENA drama “Strange Lawyer Woo Young-woo.
Kang Tae-oh took the podium as the Army’s representative at the ’68th Memorial Day Ceremony’ held at the National Cenotaph in Dongjak-gu, Seoul on June 6 to honor the late Corporal Lee Hak-soo, a veteran of the Korean War.

On the day, Kang Tae-oh read “Twenty-one Memoirs,” a bedside note written by Corporal Lee. “On the high ground, where the sound of bullets and artillery fire was constant, we fought with all our might, desperately shouting each other’s names, but we had to leave our comrades-in-arms behind, and I can’t stop feeling nostalgic, sad, and angry whenever I think of them, whom I can’t meet anymore,” he said.
“On the battlefield, we were knocked down by shrapnel from shells, and in the hospital, we had to share scarce beds with new comrades-in-arms. With these comrades-in-arms, whom I would never have known if not for the hospital bed, I sometimes shed tears of longing for the smell of home, sometimes shared funny stories, and vowed that I must get back up and fight to defend my country,” he read.
“In any era, a country can progress by leaps and bounds when its youth are eagle-eyed toward a clear goal. We, the youth, will rise up our country proudly with a burning patriotism. Thinking of our comrades-in-arms who will never return, I deliver this poem with the unwillingness to say the two words ‘goodbye’ as I miss them,” he concluded.
Kang Tae-oh played the role of Lee Joon-ho in the drama “The Strange Lawyer Woo Young-woo,” a lawyer with a genius brain and autism who falls in love with Woo Young-woo (played by Park Eun-bin).
The day after the drama ended in September last year, he joined the 37th Division Recruit Training Center in Chungcheongbuk-do, where he was selected as a teaching assistant. His discharge date is March 19 next year.
