Wolverhampton manager Julen Lopetegui is considering leaving the club with just eight days to go until the start of the season.
British media outlet ‘The Mirror’ reported on April 4 (KST), “Wolverhampton are one of the clubs that have had a quiet summer transfer window. With less than two weeks to go until the start of the league season, Lopetegui is considering his future.”
Wolverhampton had a difficult time last season, especially in the first half. Wolverhampton managed just two wins in their first 15 games. They didn’t even win a single game away from home. As a result, the club fired head coach Bruno Raz. Wolverhampton went to Steve Davis as acting manager until a new manager arrived, but nothing changed. At halftime, Wolverhampton hired Lopetegui. The move paid off for Wolverhampton. Lopetegui made his English Premier League (EPL) debut with a win. He then overhauled the team and led them out of the relegation zone. Lopetegui won nine games, drew four and lost 10 in the second half of the season to finish 13th. He took over from the bottom of the table and led them to a mid-table finish, making the following season even more exciting.
Lopetegui has a decent season ahead of him at Wolverhampton. However, Wolverhampton have not been very active in the transfer market. Aside from loan returns, they’ve only brought in two players, Matt Doherty and Tom King. These were both free agents, so there’s no spending at the moment.
Instead, players are leaving the team. Hubeng Neves, the centerpiece of the midfield, left for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal for €55 million ($783 million). Raúl Jiménez, who was responsible for the front line, also left for Fulham. In Lopetegui’s first season in charge, Wolverhampton’s failure to push on grew concerning. This led to rumors of Lopetegui’s departure.
If Lopetegui were to leave Wolverhampton, it wouldn’t be good for Hwang Hee-chan. He was given a lot of opportunities under Lopetegui. He made 19 appearances under Lopetegui, scoring four goals and providing two assists. He also played in two preseason friendlies. He also wore the captain’s armband in a match against Manchester City Academy. The EPL kicks off on March 12. If Lopetegui leaves the club so close to kickoff, Wolverhampton will be shaken up.
