Prior to the summit, the leaders of the two countries paid their respects at the Korean Atomic Bomb Victims’ Cenotaph in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

At the meeting held at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park International Conference Center, President Yoon said, “Prime Minister Kishida and I just paid our respects together at the Korean Atomic Bomb Victims’ Memorial here in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.” It is also the first time that a president has paid his respects at a memorial stone.”

President Yoon continued, “Our visit today will be remembered as the Prime Minister’s courageous action to prepare for a peaceful future while conveying his condolences to the Korean atomic bomb victims.”

President Yoon said, “When Prime Minister Kishida said during his last visit to Korea that he felt heartbroken that the victims of forced labor went through painful and sad experiences in a harsh environment, it resonated greatly with the Korean people.” The Prime Minister’s courage and determination are very precious.”

This is the first time that the leaders of South Korea and Japan have visited and paid joint obeisance to a memorial stone for Korean atomic bomb victims.

The Korean Atomic Bomb Victims Cenotaph was built to commemorate the Koreans who lost their lives in the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945.
